Niels Bohr was a Danish scientist that proposed a theory about the atom in 1913 which made him widely popular in the world of science for the rest of his life.

Early Life and Adulthood

Born on October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Christian and Ellen Bohr, Niels Henrik David Bohr was entranced into the world of physics through his parents, who were physiologists and educators. Niels had a younger brother Harold and an older sister Jenny, and all three of them grew up in a sophisticated family where everyday they were exposed to discussions, new ideas, and anything that would help them to become better communicators in later life. In 1912, Niels married Margrethe Norlund and had four sons, all of which made careers in the sciences or business. On November 18, 1962, Niels Bohr died from a stroke while in his home in Copenhagen.

Atomic Theory and other scientific studies

Niels Bohr attended the Gammelholm Grammer School until 1903, when he enlisted into Copenhagen University, where he met Professor C. Christiansen. Later, in 1909, Bohr obtained his Master's degree in Physics, and eventually in 1911, his Doctorate degree. During his time as a student at Copenhagen University, Niels Bohr won a prize from the Academy of Sciences in 1908 for a contest in which the best solution to a certain scientific problem would be the winner. To achieve the prize, Bohr conducted an experiment in his father's laboratory for surface tension by oscillating fluid jets. In 1913, Niels Bohr conducted his own theory about the atom based on workings under J. J. Thomson. He proposed that the atom had electrons surrounding the nucleus in energy levels that traveled in paths around it and could jump from level to level. His idea of an atom was compared to an onion, with multiple layers inside of each. Other scientists eventually developed this theory into a more specific analysis of the atom, but Bohr's model started the interest in quantum mechanics and is the best known version of the atom to many scientists.

Niels Bohr was a phenomenal soccer player at both of the schools he attended, but his brother Harold was better.
In 1938, he did work with Albert Einstein, and helped to make the firs atomic bomb.In 1922, he won the Nobel Prize for Physics and in 1975, his son Aage Bohr won the Nobel Prize for Physics.
In 1957, he won the Atoms for Peace Award.
